Jeffreys Lounge

Jeffreys Lounge is permanently closed. Thank you for your support!

The meal we shared at Jeffrey’s lounge was phenomenal.

The menu was well thought out, with a gradual progression of temperature, starting with a kicker of Carrot and Radish pickles, followed by numerous other dishes. What stood out was the Long Bean Pork Rice, and the Sweet Water Noodles, both of which complemented each other well. My favourite item on the menu was perhaps the long bean pork rice, which was bursting with flavour, and left all of us wanting more. The meal ended perfectly with a warm dessert that was rather traditionally Chinese.

While few (if any) would be let down by the quality of dishes Jeffrey produced, I think there is more to this Lounge than the food. I will highly recommend coming alone, and giving yourself the chance to meet people. Do remember that it is an undergraduate who is preparing food for you (at a very affordable price) within his own apartment. This is perhaps one of those stories which I will look back on, and treasure how inconceivable this concept is, if it had not been done by Jeffrey.

Food was great, conversations were heartfelt, atmosphere was perfect, and the sound of passing traffic and cozy space did nothing to dampen the vibe of the space, if anything, it added to it. Check it out, have a good conversation, before the semester ends!

I loved everything I tried on the menu, but the stir-fried long beans and the noodles stood out the most. The long beans were incredibly flavorful, and the house-pickled vegetables added the perfect touch of acidity to balance the richness of the pork. The noodles were chewy with a subtle sweetness, and I especially loved the depth of flavor from the spice-infused soy sauce. The chrysanthemum tofu flower was also a standout — really unique, hearty, and comforting.

On top of all that, the atmosphere of Jeffrey’s Lounge made the whole experience even more special. The space has this intimate, vintage charm — moody lighting and an amazing jazz playlist. Even after we finished eating, none of us wanted to leave — we ended up staying for another hour, chatting with Jeffrey and each other over drinks. Jeffrey’s Lounge is such a unique experience — I’ll definitely be bringing more visitors here to share it with them.

The tasting menu did a great job of showcasing a journey through textures. The cucumber, chrysanthemum, and noodle dishes in particular were standouts. The cucumber and chrysanthemum dish were beautifully plated and had very unique textures.

The noodle dish was very much worth the hype it was given. The sweet flavor was both unique and extremely memorable. The sauce and noodle chewiness also paired very well, in that it was not so chewy that by the time you finished the noodle the flavor of the sauce was gone, but also not so soft that too much sauce is ingested at once. The little bits peanut were also a wonderful bit of texture.

They each played very nicely into this overarching theme of engaging with texture. Jeffery also thoughtfully directed the flow of the whole meal, so that each course complemented the next. Jeffery’s lounge really is able to, from his apartment, pull off the refinement and experience of fine dining.

The meal was quite good. Jeffrey is very precise and pays attention to detail, and you can tell. From the green beans fermented in house to the parsley plant freshly trimmed in the corner to the hand pulled noodles, it’s obvious that this meal was a labor of love. My favorite was the noodles – somehow the noodles themselves had a slightly sweet flavor and the sauce was spicy, sweet, and nutty (as classic Chinese sauces go).

Definitely rivals the execution of Imm Thai and Noodle Dynasty, which is rare simply because many restaurants are not this dedicated to the craft.

Of course, you should also know that it’s run out of a Berkeley undergrad’s apartment. I think it’s quite charming and lends itself to the experience (prepare yourself for a small and slightly wobbly table, balanced out with a candlelit setting and jazz on the speakers). Half the fun is chatting with Jeffrey and the other guests and remembering what undergrad was like.

For the price the experience is worth it a thousand times over.

It was incredible. Jeffery’s Lounge provided a unique approach to a style of food that does not get as much artisanal attention. Experiencing new flavors and cooking techniques right in front of your eyes is a truly unique experience worth every penny. Our best wishes to Jeffery

Jeffreys Lounge is a pleasant surprise. We made a reservation for 4 and thoroughly enjoyed our meal! EVERYTHING was handmade with care and delivered with authentic flavors. Our favorites were the eggplant and long bean minced pork.

Service at Jeffrey’s Lounge was exceptional. He made us feel welcomed and at home.

The menu at Jeffrey’s Lounge was cohesive and yet intriguingly innovative in its course selection. While the first three dishes were good, it was second act of the meal that really exhilarated. Aromatic imported pork tossed with piquant red chiles and deliciously salty pickled yardlong beans; elaborately cut preparations of tofu and painstakingly pulled wheat noodles in a savory-sweet-tangy sauce; the homestyle delicacy of huíguōròu, or twice-cooked pork, with its rustic Sichuan charm—each dish was a delight to see brought out and twice as good in the mouth. The meal was capped off by a sort of digestif—a tángshuǐ, or sweet soup—that proves polarizing among guests of the Lounge who didn’t grow up eating for texture. Made of imported snow fungus, the “dessert” was served in a simple syrup of melted rock sugar and goji berries. The dish’s main ingredient is prized not for its taste but for its unique mouthfeel. Being my second time trying this dish, I deliberately made myself savor this delicacy’s texture. As an aficionado of Western desserts, it perhaps left me refreshed rather than truly sated—but a second, unofficial helping of huíguōròu did do the trick for that.

Fine dinning relies on two factors; food and socialization. Typically separate of each other, Jeffery’s preforms the important miracle of combining them together to create a thrilling dinning experience. Delicious courses are served perfectly separated to foster conversation among guests. The dishes themselves spark tales of culture and meaning. A direct view of the kitchen showcases the journey from ingredient to plate. Come to Jeffery’s for an unforgettable experience among new and old friends!
